Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Montessori Nook a school?

The Montessori Nook is not a school, nursery, or daycare (think of it as a fancy babysitting place instead :)) . It is a space where children aged 3–6 can engage with authentic Montessori materials with the help of a trained Montessori Guide, and where those aged 6–12 can receive homeschooling support, tutoring, or participate in Montessori-aligned extracurricular activities, such as the Creative Writing Essentials Course. Attendance is not mandatory.

While I do not issue report cards or certificates, I maintain a comprehensive record of each child's activities and can assist with annual study plans or progress reports if necessary (for instance, for Clonlara). Here, your child will not receive traditional rewards like gold stars, red dots, or stickers, because I, as a Montessorian believe in the child's intristic motivations to learn.

My child is not 3 yet. Is that a problem?

If your child is not yet 3 years old, she may still be able to participate. Although 3 years is the general guideline, it is not a strict rule. Many activities at The Montessori Nook, primarily designed for children over 3, can be adapted for slightly younger children, particularly in the areas of Practical Life, Sensorial, and Language.

Children over 30 months who do not mouth objects and are toilet trained may be eligible. Please contact me to arrange a visit and we'll see.

P.S. Potty training is crucial not because I object to changing diapers, but because the ability to control the bladder indicates a significant developmental milestone in your child's brain.

Is it possible to host a birthday party at The Montessori Nook?

Unfortunately, The Montessori Nook is too small for a traditional birthday party.

However, if your child is a regular attendee, we will certainly celebrate her Big Day in true Montessori fashion. This celebration is different from typical parties as it doesn't include party hats, confetti, games, or cake, but it's a magical experience nonetheless.

Montessori birthday celebrations uniquely honor your child through the Birthday Walk. With your assistance (photos and some information about important events in your child's life are needed), we craft an experience that deepens your child's connection to the world as she symbolically orbits the Sun. While she repeats the Earth's cosmic journey, we sing the Montessori Birthday Song and recall the main milestones of your child's life.

Is it possible to visit anytime?

The Montessori Nook operates under a single caregiver (myself), and I also have two children of my own. It's essential to book your child's spot in advance and remember that only confirmed bookings are honored. An online booking system is in the works, but currently, scheduling is done via email.

What if my child cannot attend a booked lesson?

Cancellations made at least 24 hours before the appointment will be rescheduled for another day without issue. Regrettably, lessons cannot be rescheduled after this time, and payment will be required as if your child had attended.

Regarding the extracurricular courses for ages 6-12, rescheduling is possible only if all group members agree to it.

What attire is appropriate for my child?

Comfortable clothing is best, as many Montessori activities involve sitting on the floor.

Will my child be alone?

If you insist on it, then yes, for a symbolic EUR5/hour extra fee, your child will be alone. Otherwise I'll try to schedule 3-4 kids from one age group, to give your child opportunities to experience how a Montessori Classroom works. (Dr. Montessori emphasized peer-to-peer learning, as she held the strong belief that children can learn at least as much, or more, from each other than from an adult. It also helps to practice patience, taking turns and basic social skills, like conversations and listening to others.)

But it will never happen that your 3-6 child will have lessons with a 6-12 child, as the two age groups have completely different needs.

What is the maximum number of children allowed at once?

The maximum capacity is four children. The space is limited, and certain Montessori activities (such as the Thousand Chain), require considerable room.

Do I need to accompany my child throughout the session?

For children aged 6-12, your presence is not necessary. If your child is around three years old or particularly shy, you should accompany them on their first visit. Subsequently, your presence may be discussed based on your child's comfort level, but it is generally not required.

I have a special needs child. Can she come?

Depends. Though in theory, every child benefits from working with the hands-on Montessori Materials, this can only be decided on a case-by-case basis.

While I have some limited experience in working with children on the autism spectrum (Asperger's), I have not worked with children with other types of disabilities. Besides, I am not a certified occupational therapist and therefore cannot provide such services.

However, if your child is already working with a therapist or therapeutic team, I would be happy to discuss with them how The Montessori Nook might complement your child's ongoing therapy.
